Funerals

We have had a couple of funerals recently, and they are always different, aren't they? Whether held at church or the funeral home, the music, the order of service, speakers, Gospel presentation...those things seem to set the stage so to speak. I've been really impressed by how the funerals capture the people being remembered and honored. Some are almost high energy with so much to say and see and learn. Others are quieter and more serious. Some have a holy reverence to them, others are trying to cheer us as the person did in life. Some make you think about how your own funeral will be; how will I be remembered? Have I done my best for Jesus? Still others are just a time to mourn and finally get to reflect on the life you will miss here on this side of Heaven. At todays, the seating was such that I just got to stand for a minute looking at many precious saints whose lives have touched my own tremendously the past two years.

I am thankful for our precious church family. We've been through a great deal together. Not being involved in a church, serving, living, loving, and toiling together is choosing to miss out on the greatest blessing in the life of a Christian. Church life should fill most of our time outside of taking care of our family and work. It doesn't leave tons of time for other things, but it is so worth it. Those other things ideally will be serving your community and trying to reach them for Christ, or strengthening families God puts in your path.

In this age of social media and internet, it can be easy to ignore the reality of serving in our community, but good societies are built on strong communities and communities are built on strong families. We're so fragmented in the USA for a variety of reasons, but we can counteract some of those if we will take the time to give of ourselves in person with the people living, working, and dying in our town.

Our Actions Impact Others

It isn't special revelation that our actions impact people, but I think we can fail to think through how our actions impact others. When in doubt, don't. That is wise advise I was given once. It is clear when someone has done something against us that they know wasn't above board. They may openly confess it, which is certainly preferred, or they go the route of Aaron regarding the golden calf and say that something 'happened' but leave out their role in it happening. They can also just be resentful and never say they are bothered, making the choice to love their resentment more than the relationship so that the issue never gets resolved well. We can't hold someone accountable for wronging us if they do not realize it, however. That is on us.

The issue is, when we don't rightly deal with relationship strains, other people can get brought into it and are put in a difficult or awkward situation. They've been brought into a circle of sin or offense. When people feel they need to hide something from someone else, it creates distance or discomfort. It might very well just be adults being sensitive to the feelings of others, but it might be that people sense something is wrong and they don't want to be party to it. It might be sin that we're tangoing with. If you have an offense against someone else, or are resentful, then think you've found a way to draw closer to God...you aren't hearing from the Holy Spirit. Just as we need to confess sin before having the right heart attitude with Communion, when we are actively sinning, we have distanced ourself from God so are not hearing clearly from Him. We are much more prone to go by our feelings in such times, and feelings are not the way to righteous living.

Within any organization or friendship, there is a way things are done or should be done. When someone goes rogue, it puts people in a sticky situation. Friendship is built on trust, and when that is compromised, emotional distance inevitably follows. When an organization does things a certain way and a person refuses to follow that, it is rebellious. We are to be at peace with others so far as it depends on us. When we choose to keep resentments piling up so we can one day use them to hurt someone, we are in sin, and there are real consequences to that.

We don't absolve our guilt, or gain the respect of others, when we dance around the truth of what we've done . Telling someone we've wronged that we didn't do what we did, doesn't amount to saying we're sorry. It also doesn't amount to admitting we did something wrong. We just need to own what we did and why it was wrong. If we're accused of wrong and know in our hearts we did not do that or intend to, we need to evaluate the best course of action. Sometimes a person is seeking to create a dialogue that allows them to continue on a sinful course of action and we must be mindful of that. Sometimes we need to take a step back and see if we were being insensitive. This is where timely confrontations must take place. People cannot be expected to recall details of a situation when a lot of time has passed. Only the one who feels they were wronged is marinating on a hurt for months or years. The other person, unaware of how they were perceived, isn't regurgitating the nuances because in their mind, it is a closed case and all was well.

Said another way, when we have held a grudge against someone but did not seek to clear the air for a long time, we have chosen to harm the relationship. People can't explain themselves or change if they aren't given the opportunity. Too often people who are hurt find ways to lash out, whether overt or subtle, creating a reason for a relationship to end. Hurting people hurt others. This allows avoidance of taking a hard look at the truth or changing. When a person has put someone in the place of God, for example, and they feel God is not helping them, they can then turn on the person and make them out to be the enemy, when in reality, that person was their friend and ally.

In any relationship, leaving out relevant details shows that you don't respect the person enough to tell them the whole truth, and if you don't, then find friends you will be open and honest with, because when someone can tell they aren't getting the whole story, tension is felt and erodes the relationship. Trust isn't there, and when that happens, there has been a real breakdown in the system.

When A Battle Ends

There are situations that God allows us to be in which take us to our ends...our wits' end, the end of our patience, the end of our mercy and grace, the end of our understanding. Situations that frustrate us to no end, and which torment us because we want to be gracious and kind, but the offense to our Lord is too great. The offense is more than should be borne. And yet, when others' do not know the story, we must rely on God alone to carry us through. For many years this was a story for us, and it wasn't until the 11th hour that I began to seek help in prayer from trusted, mature, Christian women. In times, as the end drew nigh, and my strength and resilience were at the brink of failure, my soul poured forth it's anguish. At times we struggle to pray because the challenges are great, and it is by God's design that we need the fellowship of believers to be fellows in our suffering. We bear one another's burdens and thus fulfill the law of Christ.

This might be one of the only times in my life where I see us having lived through something of biblical proportion. Picturing how it would be written in the Holy text. How years of failure would be penned, how years of toil would be recorded, and then the swift victory written out, and how that would be said. Many hours of pain, prayer, anguish, disbelief in what was happening, injustice, infuriating disappointment, love for His church, love for Him, love for the brethren...and pressing on and pressing on and pressing on. And it would be said in a sentence in the Bible.... Maybe two.

Our lives and the hours spent wrapped up neatly with,  "And then he was gone." Just like that.

Cain killed his brother Abel. But all the details in the midst of that we aren't told...

and Enoch walked with God...but there all the things we aren't privy to that also happened.

And God slew him...and God smote him...and God's anger was kindled. Many day in and day out details are not said or known in Scripture, but the high points where we see God's hand of power, God's direction of the destiny, ARE stated. "And we know all things work together for good to them that love Him and are called according to His purpose."

How humbling to be a part of history like that. God is too good and mysterious, and yet, He is known and wants us to know Him...those He called before the foundation of the earth was laid can know the King of Kings! How can it be?

Oh my King, how powerful You have shown Yourself to be! How great and mighty is Your hand! How you bring justice! Even when You do make it right, it is still painful as we're torn between sadness and joy. Why do we force Your mighty hand to act? When you answer our prayer to do what must be done because evil acts prevail and Your creation is suffering...why must it hurt to witness? You have wrought us as so frail we cannot handle Your justice without a mix of emotions. But God, I praise You for Your deliverance! My heart is so full and so fearful of Your just hand. We have seen Your salvation. We have seen You defend what is Yours. It is You who lifts up and puts down! How can my soul ever despair when men come and go as powers and kings? It cannot! You are too great! Too Sovereign! Too Almighty! My soul exalts the Lord who made Heaven and earth! You have done it! You have redeemed and freed, and cast down what must be cast down. You have seen, You have heard our cry. Be magnified Oh Lord in Your church! Be magnified in all the earth! We are but clay, mold us and make us, move us and use us for Your honor and good pleasure and glory ALONE. "Now to Him who is ABLE to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all generations, Amen and amen!"

How do we live our daily lives, making decisions, living and dying, building and tearing down, and all the while it is under the umbrella of your Sovereignty and perfect will? You are too great for me. Holy, HOLY, HOLY is the Lord God Almighty. I am Yours. Do with me what you will. Amen. Thank you, Father. You have saved us.

Why to Love the Church

https://youtu.be/i_Oi1yeo-ZI?si=DjKq5SQWJ0GXnxua

A great sermon by John MacArthur on Reasons to Love the Church. This is part 2 which I don't think any serious Christian could disagree with.

My Small Tribute

Pastor John MacArthur has been a part of my life for nearly 30 years. While studying at Virginia Tech, I met Jesus, and landed at Harvest Baptist Church. The pastor, who was studying for his MDiv through The Master's University, was very good with helping me grow in Christ. He gave me the first MacArthur book, Charismatic Chaos, because some of the roommates I had at the time were into speaking in tongues. One was part of a movement that taught you how to do that because it meant you were genuinely saved (due to the filling of the Holy Spirit, which they wrongly taught happened apart from salvation). The book cleared up many confusing points of Christianity, and it was the seed that grew into many titles from that godly man. I've listened to more sermons on Grace to You than any other source, and am so thankful. Being forgiven and set free from the bonds of my sin was the greatest event of my life, and John MacArthur taught me more than I could ever say. I've never rejoiced at the news of someone dying until his passing. It was just the immediate thought to be happy to know such a faithful servant was finally in the presence of the One he longed to glorify. John MacArthur taught me to love the church...to put myself in the background and be content serving where God has chosen. I'm thankful GTY.org will continue to play sermons. I'll continue listen. And while I am very sad that John isn't out in California anymore, I've got a peace that God's timing is best and that everything is going to be alright.

The Sting of Death and Remembering

Technology is such a blessing and a curse. I'm torn at the moment on which it is. I've just finished reading an email exchange between my dear old friend and myself from Aug 2015. My friend has been with the Lord for 8 years now, so this was not terribly long before the end of her life. The end was so unexpected and tragic. Out of it was born another wonderful friendship for me between her mom and me. That sweet friendship lasted until 2024 when she, at 93, said her final farewell. Two great losses from the same family. Both caring listeners with comforting advice. Reading my friend's words just makes me cry. I hear her voice in those words and am flooded with memories on what a comfort she was during some lonely years. The narrow road of raising conservative Christian children was often one where I wished for friends. I had this one friend who understood my concerns and why we just didn't fit with most people.

God knows what we need when we need it. He knows who we need when we need them.

I'm not sure how I went from being 41 to 51 so fast. How I went from having a very close friend to being someone who tragically lost my closest friend. We all live with loss and we move forward. God shows us blessings and those do ease the pain of loss. I'd never want to trade the friendship with my friend's mom for anything. She was such a dear lady to me. My first widowed friend as a matter of fact. How I loved that English girl!

It is amazing how we can be so sure we need something only to look back and see that we don't need it presently at all. God is so faithful. He has carried me along and now so many things I recall struggling with, are barely a thing in my world. There's still hints here and there at times, but He has filled gaps, given purpose, and given friends to walk this road of life. I don't have the same needs now as I had as a younger woman.

He gives a greater grace, and He gives it when we need it. My church family has become so important to me. Moreso than I would have ever thought possible. And God has used the tragedy of my friend's loss to always keep the flame burning of truth in mental health issues and how many of the struggles in that category are not dealt with rightly by the world. My faith in psychology couldn't be lower. My faith in mental hospitals couldn't be lower. My belief that mind altering drugs help people is nearly zero, and when they do, it is a needle in a haystack situation. People struggle with real problems and respect for human life and dignity demands real answers, which come from God and His word and those who know how to use it to help. Hormonal changes from cancer and surgery need a very careful handling. Mind altering drugs are not the answer. We have to have a solution to the crisis a woman's body goes through before we remove all her hormones.

God's timing is perfect, always. And He knows the end from the beginning, yet somewhere in there is human responsibility and consequences to actions. A lot of things do not add up, and I'm thankful I can take comfort that my friend is with the Lord. That is the only way I can relax and leave it in His hands to have the final justice.

Signing off tonight, remembering Terri and Rita, with love. ♥

Churches in God's Revelation to John

I think it is interesting when studying the Revelation how we can see the problems in the churches of Ephesus, Pergamos, Thyatira and yet be unmoved in examining our own church and life of service. Even as the sins in these churches are specifically named, why is it we do not have specific examples of the problems that are relevant to now as we talk? Things are always theoretical and not specific, but Christ was very specific. I find it noteworthy also that when Christ has something against them, it was for sinning. Not a willy nilly condemnation on them being unwise, but what that lack of wisdom, or lack of faithfulness led to.

We know the messages about the churches are messages for us today. They should cause us to examine our own churches and our own lives and deal seriously with wrong thinking and teaching. Too often we keep things theoretical, as if we are looking through a glass pane at the past and taking note, but we don't really dig hard and say, "Is there a Jezebel in OUR church? Am I a Jezebel??"

Do we ask ourselves if WE have left our first love and thought through what that would look like, or do we assume that of course we haven't? Our service is from a heart of love for Christ and therefore we are never jealous or petty, we never withhold information so we appear to be in the "in" crowd. We aren't competitive with our fellow believers, playing in to the games some others play with having 'favorites'. We don't care if someone else got information first or was able to hold the baby or whatever. Our love for each other and Jesus is always before our own eyes....

Do we gloss over the sins of the people in the churches in Revelation and think we aren't represented really, but if we were to be, surely we are like Smyrna who was suffering for righteousness? Do any churches look at the Revelation and examine themselves and take action?

If I were to look at churches in America, I see things God could easily come and condemn them for. I could see Christ condemning the church for setting His vulnerable children under the teachings of mockers and scorners day and and day out (government schools). I cannot for the life of me picture God pleased with His people doing this, and I can certainly envision a much harsher condemnation for those who heartily approve of encouraging others to set their children under teaching that is contrary to God's truth, Creation, Christ's payment for our sin being of critical importance etc. I do not see God in Revelation condemning the churches for having unwise positions and leaving as a minor thing. He goes after how that lack of wisdom led to sinful behaviors. Is there even a genuine difference between doing something unwise and sinning? Is it acceptable for Christians who should know better to act unwisely? Does that get a pass?

We drink daily in front of our children, not to get drunk, but we set the example as a Christian. Does God slap our hand and say to the church who allows that sort of thing, "Bad idea but it was just unwise?" I don't see that sort of character in the Lord. I see clearly defined criticisms from Him, and we know He is serious about causing little ones to stumble.

Does putting impressionable children (of Christians) under the authority of the ungodly (also called wicked, depraved, rebellious) NOT constitute a stumbling block, particularly when the materials they use to teach leave God out and promote lifestyles abhorrent to the Creator? Does entrusting children made in the image of God to people who would have aborted them, or think they should be able to "change" their gender, or who practice homosexuality, or who deny God, who are unregenerate in general, is that like causing them to stumble and teaching them to sit among scoffers? What category does that fall into if not that?

I'm of the mindset that a huge blind spot in American Christianity is heartily approving of and using godless, government run schools to educate. I think we will see His judgment on this issue. The short-sighted want to say that position stems from results, claiming that kids from private schools and homeschools turn out unregenerate, too, so we can't criticize public schools. Who has said anything about RESULTS? I'm talking about the front end of decision making where wisdom and an understanding of our responsibility as parents to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord is supposed to lead. I'm not talking about results anywhere. Our obedience to the Lord is based on doing the right thing for the right reasons and we entrust results to Him.

I think another criticism God has in today's churches is the lack of caring what His word says and the lack of serious devotion to it. Too many churches want to entertain from the pulpit and I see that style no where in Scripture. We are flippant and concerned with socializing while we say we aren't!

Others can go so far as to cast doubt on the authority of Scripture even though they claim to be genuine churches. These institutions are focused on building their church and fellowshipping, not offending anyone.

There are problems with women leading and weak men allowing them to. There is a lack of leadership and those "stars" will be judged for letting factions come up or stifling their people's learning.

So many things....we have to examine ourselves and make sure we are not playing into whatever problems plague our own church. We can repent on behalf of the church body and ask God to convict and bring change, but it has to start somewhere. One person can make a difference.

I recommend watching the videos in the sidebar entitled The Children of Caesar by Voddie Baucham.

Jonah Chapter 1

This is a good start to the book of Jonah. An insightful picture of the King of Kings.

A Wasted Life

Pastor Darrin has just preached a sermon on a wasted life. It can be found here.

As believers in and followers of Jesus Christ, it can be discouraging to watch people waste their life. In reading The Doctrine of Repentance, the section I'm in is dealing with presuming upon God's patience and mercy, and thus, continuing in sin. How long will God be patient with the unrepentant sinner? Only He knows. A clear illustration given is that of a marksman with a bow, the longer it is drawn back upon its target, the more penetrating the retribution will be. How long will He tarry with the presumed saved who show little evidence of being saved? Only He knows. It is a sad thing to waste many years not actively bringing glory to the One True God.

How can we expect to have the peace of God if we do not have peace WITH God? This peace is not positional peace that comes from being forgiven of our sins, trusting in the shed blood of Christ and His glorious resurrection. It is the practical peace that comes as a result of living the way God tells us to in subjection to His authority.

It is absolutely shocking that we would expect God to give all the blessings of an obedient and sacrificial life to those who disobey even the most basic of commands as He does to His children who suffer for righteousness' sake day in and day out, or who prioritize serving faithfully in their local church or elsewhere as they are physically able. God looks at the heart, man looks outward, but God has given us very clear instructions if we genuinely belong to Him. Doing those things He says to do and not having true love for Him will mean nothing, but we DEMONSTRATE our love by obeying the One who has saved us.

Too often we love ourselves above God. Too often we say, "No, God you tell your children to do this and do that, but I say, nah, I'll do it my way." Question to ponder: who is in charge there? Who is calling the shots? Who is god in that scenario?"

The 'vending machine god' is a god we mortals have invented. We 'believe' and we 'pray' but we pray to a weak god who clearly isn't worth obeying. He isn't worth corporately worshipping. I mean 1-2 hours out of the 168 hours we get weekly is clearly TOO MUCH to ask. Year after year after year we do NOT obey and instead choose to forsake the assembling of ourselves together. Year after year we choose to NOT be baptized by immersion as the Scripture teaches, which is the living word of God. Year after year we rob God by not giving back the small portion He has instructed us to give back to Him (10% of our gross income). And yet we pray for blessings and help financially. And we pray for healing. And we pray for protection and peace.

I'm no ruler of the universe and am certainly not the smartest person alive, but how in the world can this be the way to treat the Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Omniscient God of all? Do we think He doesn't care how His genuine subjects treat Him? Do we think it doesn't matter?? I guess that is it. We are so ignorant, willfully so given the freedom we have to listen to sermons, worship openly and read the Bible, that we think we can just get "saved" and be good. God is long-suffering but is that really a trait of His to push and push? The regret I feel having lived for self the first 21 years of my life is nothing compared to someone who has racked up double that living for self upon coming to faith in Christ. True faith, saving faith says, I have to be with God's people. I have to sing His praises. I want Him to use my time, talents and treasure to accomplish His will in the world. It is something else when we refuse to give Him any of that. There are 168 hours in a week. I guess we deserve to spend all of them on ourselves while expecting ol' vending machine to crank out whatever we want and need.

No church is perfect. Buckle up for that newsflash. Read the New Testament and you will see that reality and then see it live time when you get involved in a church. The imperfectness will only be magnified when you start attending and get into serving like you should because you are also imperfect like every other person serving in that church. Is it thought that God doesn't realize churches are full of imperfect humans trying to serve perfectly but who fail?

Excuses. God sees them and it is His mercy that brings misery to us, driving us to obey and live for Him.

Choose you this day who you will serve, because Scripture is clear. If you aren't actually serving the God of the Bible and thus, the world, you are serving another god. One day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess Jesus Christ as Lord, and actually believing that leads to ACTION friends.

14 “Now, therefore, [a]fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and [b]truth; and do away with the gods which your fathers served beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 But if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served, which were beyond the Euphrates River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:14-15

Sanctification, Growing Older....

I've recently finished reading chapter 9 of Adorned by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth. It is an excellent chapter about purity. Purity is a lost adjective in today's vernacular, at least among the worldly Christians and secular society. I've been thinking about how becoming more sanctified naturally lends itself to becoming more pure, more holy. Qualities such as these cannot be hidden; they are what a person, a woman, embodies. It is who she is. One wouldn't tell an off-color joke around her because it is understood she wouldn't appreciate the humor and would probably be offended. Because this sort of woman is polite and gracious, she likely wouldn't say anything in the midst of an uncomfortable, inappropriate exchange (assuming the Lord's name or character weren't being put in question), but she would excuse herself from continuing with the banter. May we all strive to be women who others naturally do not want to offend. When people apologize for swearing around us or curb their drinking around us, let us hope it is because they respect our positions quietly as we have quietly demonstrated our own.

Quiet demonstrations lead to the topic this post is about, which is sanctification and how obvious it is. And how obvious it isn't.

When someone claims to be a Christian, but shows no growth in Christlikeness, there is a lack of sanctification happening. This is a cause for concern. Reading and hearing Scripture should engage the mind and will of a follower of Jesus Christ. We should be challenged to change when we see our way of living doesn't align with God's way. Our service in church should increase the longer we're in Christ because we know our serving others is how we serve Him, using the gifts He's given us for that very purpose. Sanctification is a life-long element of a Christian's existence. This leads to the second point of this post and that is growing older. One of the many benefits of growing older is the number of years to observe life. Our own life and the lives of those around us. Time tells us all we need to know about where someone is in their walk with Christ. What is claimed to be believed will be shown or not shown over time.

Birds of a feather flock together as the old saying goes. Who do you flock with? Who is in my flock? We will know Christians by their love and surely we know much about them by who they spend time with. Pay attention to who you spend time with. What influences you? Who are your close friends?

We serve a powerful and good God who is interested in the sanctification of His children. He is actively available to help us not look like we looked last year, the year before that, the year before that and so on. ♥

The Small Things in Mothering Aren't So Small

One of the great lies that has permeated our culture, including in the church, is that the traditional aspects of motherhood aren't important. Somehow we've bought into the wrong thinking that a quiet mother content to be home all day nurturing her children isn't a mother who is pulling her own weight. Somehow we've forgotten that God's design is that children are raised by a mother at home, ideally one who is the quiet force of prayer behind her husband who is out in the world, shouldering the difficult things of the world as he provides for his family. There is an element of protection a husband offers to his wife who is able to fully and freely give her time and energy to the important task of raising the children. It is important for children to live on a schedule, be served regular meals each day in the home, be clean, and not rushed all the time. Life should be able to naturally happen without continual distractions from the outside world, be it the cell phone, TV, continual social interaction with others, or many organized sports or activities. Why have we as mothers in today's world lost sight of how important all these little things are?

Added together the daily routine of life is what builds a stable home for our children. Meals should be around the same time every day sitting at the kitchen table as a family. Baths should be regular with the same general routine surrounding them. Teaching time should be consistent. This chaos that makes one wonder, "What is the mother DOING?" should not be the thought people have when they see our homes and lives. Christian mothers in particular should be exemplifying the truth of "Let all things be done decently and in order."

Being with one's children and not having paid employment outside the home does not make one a good, full time mother. The little daily routines of life are not small or unimportant; they are each important. The vast majority of child training happens in the midst of the stable routine of life. It is against this backdrop an attentive mother can see the wrinkles in her children that need to be worked on and worked out. If everything surrounding the ever-changing growth and tendencies of children is in flux and changing, where is the focal point with which to measure and make the needed changes? It is too hard.

Mothers, where are you? Who is feeding, dressing, cleaning your children? Who is taking care of the home God has provided for you and your family? Why will you not show your husband you appreciate what he has worked hard to give you by keeping it clean and orderly?

Christians should do everything with excellence. The mark of excellence is a mark or order, being on time, cleanness, reliability, stability, restfulness, peace, holiness....Sadly when you look in our churches and homes you find far less than that. Our culture has been infiltrated by communistic ideas that motherhood doesn't matter. Wives are doing their own thing, worrying about far more than instilling excellence in their primarily responsibilities. Materialism has too many women working so that designer clothes, expensive vehicles and fancy homes can be possessed. Mothers seek fulfillment serving others at the expense of their children, too often thinking that their children will 'catch Christianity ' by seeing them serve others. Unfortunately, we're trading what is best for what is merely ok. We've bought the lie as women that there is more out there to this life of motherhood, and we're tacking on tons of extras that take us away from keeping the white fence post white. We are not learning to be content and consistent, we are honing our skills of avoiding what is hard for us. God help us! Help the church to be on time, excellent, clean, orderly and full of mothers making the needed sacrifices to raise their children well, at home.

Idolatry 2023

https://www.compellingtruth.org/graven-image.html

Our pagan culture does not speak of idolatry often. Idolatry in the lives of those who openly live in opposition to God is not what concerns me. They will face judgment, which is sad. What burdens this writer are the masses who think they are worshipping the one true God in spirit and truth but are violating what is clearly written. We are only to worship God the Father, Jesus His Son and His Holy Spirit. No one else deserves or should receive it- to do so is blasphemy and idolatrous. Reverence to statues in a so-called church is also idolatry.
Teaching children to venerate statues is condemning them to a false belief system that will be pointing in the wrong direction for eternity. It's a serious matter.  Thou shalt have no other gods before me is the 1st commandment, and the Me spoken of is God the Father. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved other than the name of Jesus Christ. To esteem anyone other than the triune Godhead as worthy of worship or veneration is violating the 1st commandment. The 2nd commandment from God is violated when we make statues that we show acts of worship to or revere in some way. Idols in our hearts are a problem as well; nothing should come before God the Father. No small worship of lessers is ok. It's hard to fathom that people still pray in front of statues, place flowers at their feet, or put crowns on their heads when we've had God's 10 Commandments for a very very long time.

Daniel

I've been enjoying more study time in Daniel this month, and thought I'd share some good sermons that have aided my endeavors. It is a joy to have time to dig into God's word more now that the homeschooling years are finished. Days are so different from when the kids were being raised! Those days were filled with much keeping of the home, rearing and educating, teaching at co-ops, taking care of lots of critters here at home, and facilitating friendships for the kids.

Rather than lament days gone by, it is great that now there is so much more time for other endeavors! Being older, priorities and opportunities shift, which is refreshing. I can serve at church in more ways, help out financially by working outside the home, minister to younger moms more, have more time for prayer, and I can minister to my husband more intentionally. My kids control their social lives! The needs of the home with yardwork, animals and day to day child rearing are past. My kids are people I prioritize among my friends. Getting older is nice. It has it's hardships as each stage does, but for me, this is a time I love.

Losing Respect for Someone

We all have people we know and respect. Sometimes onlookers would wonder at why a certain person would gain our respect, and perhaps sometimes we wonder why others respect us. Regardless, for better or worse, there are those we esteem above others for their character, accomplishments, conduct, reputation, knowledge or something else. Then there are those who look to us as role models.

What is rather interesting is that while earning respect or choosing to bestow it can take time, removing our respect for someone or losing someone's respect, can happen quickly. There can be an irrational nature to the ending of an esteemed status. This causes me to pause and think hard about the emotional nature of respecting others, or being respected, and why it should not be very important to us one way or the other. It shouldn't puff us up when we've found ourselves respected by others because it is often a fleeting emotional situation. And we should be cautious how much respect we bestow on others because it may not take much for us to feel differently.

In the era of covid-19, we've all seen this shift due to something simple like people's personal choice over getting or not getting a vaccine. The harsh judgment that ensued from one person to another is truly beyond comprehension. This situation was used by the devil to put rifts where none existed, and it has not built up the body of Christ or helped society. The vaccine situation helped confirm what we knew about some people already. It also revealed the heart of others we knew well. I'm sure I'm not alone in stating plainly that the playing field looks different now among our social circles than it did in 2019. Who we count as friends, who we walk circumspectly around, and who we think has left sound reason (probably never to return) may surprise and even sadden us. What has really made this situation what it is, isn't what people individually chose to do for themselves and WHY, but the people who would not leave it at that. The people who felt compelled to push their opinion and agenda on others, whether to vaccinate or not, ruined many relationships. People who overestimated their power of influence or who failed to rightly understand those around them, those who refused to hear why someone was doing what they were doing, showed themselves to be small-minded, immature, and lacking sound judgment. Those issues are the crux of the problem. When focusing on that, who cares what someone did or didn't do regarding the vaccine (which I use that term for simplicity, the covid-19 shot did not vaccinate anyone from contracting the virus).

Thankfully, for Christians, it is the Lord whom we serve. His good opinion is all that matters, and He sees our hearts. He separates the wheat from the chaff, and He gives people positions to serve Him. One day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and what we used to medicate ourselves when sick will not be a prerequisite for entry to Heaven.

Praying Friends

Being private about our lives is great, important even. Particularly if one is in delicate circumstances. Sometimes, however, we need the body of Christ to come alongside us in prayer. Having a few trusted prayer-warrior friends is a gift from God. While we need local good friends, having out-of-state praying friends is quite priceless.

I've asked trusted people to pray for me a couple of times the last few months, and I can see the effects clearly. My thinking improves. For example, I can see afresh that rude people are their own punishment, they live amidst self- inflicted unhappiness. My life does not have to be impacted by people like that. I can deal with the momentary problem, then go on. Crazy, angry, people do what they do and I can continue to do what I do. When we know we have not wronged someone who breeds conflict, we can rest easy.

The same goes for the people who love to know everything going on...the people who talk to everyone and ask questions to learn more than folks prefer to share, or those who learn about you and like to stir the soup with their knowledge. People who need to flaunt what they know about you so they can give the impression of being important...or so they can incite jealousy, or so they can add credibility to their own stories by casually talking about you like they are your pal, always angling, essentially using your good name to influence others with their ideas. We can let people live while we live, trusting the truth will set us free.

Lord, help me be holy, pray for those who despitefully use me, and enable me to love my enemies.
