Many can quote the pithy saying that bitterness is like drinking poison and hoping another person dies. Sadly, this does not necessarily illumine the quoter to seeing their own bitterness.
Bitterness can keep us from rightly seeing a situation because of our unforgiveness and past hurts. It can make us justify unwise choices.
Eventually, it can cause us to lose the very thing we may want most: respect, admiration, and friends.
We may know we have a pride issue, but with bitterness as part of the equation, we tend to dig our heels in harder on why we will NOT change our perspective, and that pressure causes the resentment we hold to seep out so that everyone (but us) can see it. Strongholds of bitterness and resentment are dangerous for Christians. If you suspect you have this problem, ask God to show you and give you the strength to deal with the pain that got you to where you are, properly, and to restore you to wholeness!
