Excellent Shirts to Help WNC

I love these! Short or long-sleeved, friends in WNC have come up with a great way to raise funds to buy more books to help families impacted by the devastating effects of Hurricane's Helene and Milton. My burden is for WNC and the families there, as well as new friends and countless volunteers toiling along to help people rebuild their lives. Please consider ordering!

Need in This Location--HSLDA Posted

Tammy Thacker called us saying she is working on packets and information kits for new homeschool families as well as any general info she can provide at her homeschool event on December 11. She's also collecting homeschool curriculum new or unused whole set (teacher manual, student workbook), materials.

Her internet service is not the best right now, so it's difficult accessing Facebook. She asked if we could share if anyone wants to donate curriculum:

Curriculum is Still Needed for This Location

They are still in need of curriculum for this homeschool curriculum event, and then hub going forward after the event. They especially need middle and upper elementary grades. The contact for this group is Cortney Taylor. Please send me a message for her contact info if you want to organize a collection to take to her or mail her a box of books or new books/curriculum you want to send.

Claritas Resources to Help Homeschoolers and Those Suddenly Homeschooling

Here is a list of resource books to help families new to homeschooling. This isn't curriculum but many are finding themselves taking responsibility for their children's education and these books can help.

I loved classical education and would use Claritas today if I was starting afresh.

The memory work is what I'm recommending because it is key to a classical education. The work guide and work audio would be very helpful to a family that wants to educate in this way. Several sets of Timeline cards would be ideal to send along as well.

Please Remember Our Neighbors in North Carolina Who Need Our Help: Curriculum Distribution Date

Written by Kateland Miller, of West Jefferson, NC

For any and all who have donated curriculum to our area, Thank You! The need is far greater than I anticipated. I am serving the High Country of Western North Carolina and the surrounding area. This consists of Watauga, Ashe, Avery, Wilkes, Allegheny NC, Grayson and Carroll VA, and a Johnson TN.

Many lost some, some lost all is my saying. There are not a ton of existing homeschoolers who lost everything. Those will receive priority. There is a huge amount that have significant home damages, vehicle damages, personal property loss and the sheer fact of dealing with the destruction all around. For those people, receiving donated curriculum means they will not have to worry about next years purchase and they can instead use the money to go towards their other needs, which are great. There is a decent amount of new homeschoolers due to 3 schools completely flooding, two of which are still not back in school and the other holding school in a conference center.
I would love to individually thank every person who is making this possible on every group, but I would never be able to help those in need, nor educate my own children.
I have been personally reaching out to individual families who I know were heavily impacted, homeschool co-ops, and any other avenue of finding those that need help. Please follow along on High Country 21st Century Packhorse Librarian to see updates on where your donations are going and the difference you have made.
We will be hosting our first community wide distribution day on December 19th. This ensures plenty of time to receive donations and distribute to the families that are in the greatest need.

Donations of used curriculum that are sorted by subject and are not written in are needed. Student books without teacher manuals are ok, but please no teacher manuals without needed student texts/workbooks. Many new to homeschooling are receiving these materials. Please bind sets with rubber bands or plastic wrap. Materials of all sorts, even those for parents on how to homeschool, are needed and welcome. Curriculum can be mailed to The Gathering Church 370 Mount Jefferson State Park Rd. West Jefferson, NC 28694 or taken to several locations listed on the HSLDA Used Curriculum for Hurricane Victims site or the above links. You can also connect with me on FB for more address options.

The Situation in Western North Carolina

It is so distressing to have neighbors south of us still without power, after more than a month. FEMA doesn't seem to be particularly capable. Roads are still out, schools overpacked or closed, and when they reopen in Yancey County on Nov 18th, it is not an easy situation for parents to navigate. Yes, normalcy is good for kids, and they will get 2 meals on school days, but what if they can't shower? What about the safety of the roads for them trying to get to and from? There's a helpful element for parents trying to clean up and rebuild to have the children taken care of and progressing with school, but there are these concerns and a general anxiety many of them feel. I'm guessing some of that is due to the unsettled environment, and the fallout of tragedy and not having your kids nearby. It makes sense that it is a very challenging time for people.

I've heard firsthand accounts from a new friend in the area who is a local. A fellow believer in Christ, she had a similar disquieted experience in her spirit about a relief worker whose motivations and background were questionable. We both went our own way, and this new friend has been able to help a lot of families get materials they need. An experienced homeschooler knows how to meet the needs of other homeschoolers, and help those new to it get started.

One thing I've been seeing and hearing from folks in this group I'm in, is that most of the people in NC are not interested in handouts. They might have little or nothing, but the general air I pick up on is that they figure someone else has it worse and needs it more. I was told a story of a lady who was at the curriculum and supply giveaway and said she didn't need materials because they didn't lose their materials. My friend asked her about her home, was it damaged?

Yes, was the reply.

Is it cleaned up and repaired? Was your insurance claim approved? No.

Was FEMA helping you? No.

So this poor lady was saying she had no need for the curriculum, but when asked, "Don't you think it would help your family to take this material for each of your kids so you don't have to worry about next year's schooling expenses?" To which the mother with the ruined home with foundation issues that were going to cost them a fortune broke down crying. And this is one story of one hurting family.

I'm not there to physically help and encourage and hug these mothers. I wish I was. God has a different plan, so I'm doing what I can from Virginia. This rebuilding is an undertaking of epic proportions, and the families will be forever changed. If it could happen in NC in an area that isn't a hurricane flood area, it could happen here.

Lord, please reach into the hearts of all those hurting and unsure of how to get their lives back together. Please calm their dreams, and alleviate their fears. Give them that peace that passes all understanding if they are Your children, and please call those who are not Your own to come to faith in You. Strengthen the pastors and draw families into those communities to bring needed resources, labor, and encouragement. You can do all things, and You can move mountains. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Realities You Learn Along the Way

1. Reputations cause results that differ from one person to another

2. Those who think they deserve top billing, often don't get it

3. Leadership takes many forms. On one end, parameters are clearly defined for all to see and know, the other end is to  keep lines blurry so as to not get boxed in. Both are intentional methods.

4. It is better to strive to do the right thing than to not do the right thing, even when it causes discomfort

5. At some point in life, you find it is harder to work with others, but you still do it for the greater good.

6. When wrongly perceived, keep moving forward and leave it to God to defend you.

7. When in the wrong, quickly seek reconciliation, keep moving forward and leave it to God.

8. You can only control your own thinking and actions

9. Choosing to be in control of everything is a sound way to implode a thing

The Chosen Is Hiding Some Things... - John MacArthur

Today's Widow Brunch

Despite the design of my house, which has a small dining room and narrow entry into the kitchen, I've been hosting widows and ladies over 70 for brunch somewhat regularly. Today's devotion was something I saw from Katy Pistole on LinkedIn last night.

Katy was my oldest daughter's first writing teacher outside of me, when she was around 7 years old. It was such a thrill to have a local author teach my girl writing for a few weeks. Katy's books were beloved horse tales that we saw come out Christmas after Christmas to be savored when the clamor of school was dimmed during break. Katy is the Director of Beautiful Brokenness Ministries. I don't know a lot about her ministry, but the things I do know about her have been a blessing.

Here is what I shared leading into reading Revelation 4 and 5.

Katy Pistole

Her video of The Dance which accompanies the story is so moving. What a picture of the glorious freedom we have in Jesus Christ when we give Him ourselves and learn to trust Him with our past, present and future.

Here's My One Political Post

Satanic influences abound and here is an example with Kamala Harris. Absolutely unbelievable. I do not think anyone who is actually in Christ as a born-again believer can vote Democrat. It is a deceived person who does; meaning, they are outside of a saving relationship with Christ. I don't go around saying this because hearts aren't changed by pounding on the outside of the man, but here on my blog where I can say what I think to those who choose to read what is written, I'm saying it.

https://notthebee.com/article/someone-shouted-jesus-is-lord-at-a-kamala-rally-and-kamala-responded-that-he-was-at-the-wrong-rally

We need to be in prayer for those who hate truth, hate God, and are heading to an eternity in Hell. God help us love those people.

Counseling One Another by Paul Tautges

I think this is a worthwhile website to have bookmarked and there are numerous titles that seem good for one's library. On the recommendation of a trusted pastor friend, I've referred others to this site. I've found Paul's take on certain books aligns with my own, and the articles he writes are sound. I haven't read everything so I always urge people to use discernment and pray, and wives, talk to your husbands before aligning with anything.

That said, this is a worthwhile read, especially if you are a Roman Catholic or were. It is his testimony of how he came to Christ. He does such a great job explaining and it has reminded me how empty I was before Christ. It can be something we forget and then we lose our passion to share with others, or we trust God less than we did to impress on people how much they need Him.

Worth Checking Out

 Martyn Iles

The new executive CEO of Answers in Genesis is not afraid to publicly say what needs to be said, and what has needed to be said in America. Do I think this will change the tide of our wicked culture? No, but that isn't necessarily the point. The point is to glorify the Creator God and stop letting the wicked voices of the day be the loudest. We know Christ is victorious and one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. What I really appreciate is his urgency to speak and preach the truth.

Why I Rarely Look Back

It has been an emotional few days, and I've added some activities that haven't made it better. Albeit, unintentionally, but I'm realizing a few things I'll share regarding looking back.

Old photos, old videos, old letters from loved ones who are no longer with us, old stuffed animals, boxes of keepsakes, unfilled photo books from when you had a baby but never used ...do these things point us closer to Christ or do they fill our hearts with sadness?

Maybe some people look through and feel happier. For over 15 years we never had photos of our children around the house. It was very upsetting for me to look back and see the fast passage of time. My husband has been the same way. He also doesn't look back on the anniversary of deaths like some people. He isn't a grave site visitor and doesn't relish looking at old videos or too many pictures of the kids when they were small. I see why.

My dad and step-mom were here visiting with an impromptu trip the past couple of days. I love seeing my dad, but it is kind of rare, and well, he's 82 and it is difficult to picture life with him gone. I wish we lived closer for easier visiting, but God hasn't granted that prayer. It isn't His will for us to have them over weekly for dinner or even monthly, and that has to be accepted. I've prayed for a long time to be nearer to our family if it is His will, and here we are still after almost 19 years. It's surprising to me and sometimes very frustrating. At other times I am content and just don't think about it, or I see God's wisdom in it and am fine.

During this visit that made me sad and left me confused at times, my dear friend and her family left the area for a new adventure very far away. It has been coming for nearly 7 months, but it is always hard when the trigger is pulled. Life changes so fast and suddenly, even when you are anticipating the newness. If they are like us with the ages of their kids, their whole lives could be lived in this new state, as ours has been here. We arrived when our children were 4, 2 and 8 months. These are pages written by the Lord that gradually unfold and before you know it, it's a book of your life in a certain place for a certain time, full of ups, downs and everything in between. And your children call it home, and it holds something special for them they can't get elsewhere...and to leave it is a big deal for them.

In the midst of this, I needed a new phone and was trying to get it set up. Quickly my abundance of texts and pictures became a problem, so the heartache ramped up as I had to go through many old videos, label them, move them to my external hard drive...there's a video that is precious to me from Nov 2008 that has been lost. I've got the still shot but the AVI file is gone, and it pains me deeply. The kind of pain you have to go to God with because it seems overly dramatic, but I could cry hard over the loss of it if I let myself. I just feel so bad that in all the file corruptions and backing up over the past 10 years, this special file of my middle girl reciting the books of the Bible is only embedded in our memories. God has a reason. He cares about the things that trouble us, and He knows if one of my old computers has that file uncorrupted. The fact I know the exact date is a blessing, but it also shows that if He wanted me to have the file, He could bring it. A lof of 2008 was lost in a computer crash so I'm fortunate to have anything...But the videos and passage of time...my children yet unsaved, yet unrefined, learning, growing, adorable, messy, beautiful, giggly and small...and me, young, learning, thin, tireless, determined...I don't want to go back. I don't want to do it all again. I just want to hold them one more time sometimes when they were carefree and I had all the answers. Seeing their beautiful tiny faces, dancing, singing, so happy without adult cares...what a joy. But those days can't last. And they don't. And in general, is is best to not dwell on that and keep looking forward. Not too hard when you are in the throes of parenting, but when it slows down, oh discipline is needed so you don't waste these next 'best years of your life'. The reality is, some children are stuck in the younger years mentally, and I need to be thankful to God that mine are not. Accidents happen and thriving adults revert to a childlike state, and I need to remember that it is the natural and good course that has given us all the expected seasons of life. We've always said we're raising adults, and that must be before us at all times until we successfully launch 3 serious followers of Christ who are an asset to their family, their church, and their community.

So back to looking back...in Scripture we're only to look back to see the blessings of the Lord and to glorify God, or to learn from our sin and go forth and not do it anymore. We're not supposed to look back for digging up hurts or for rehashing this or that. When we look back to remember, it is for specific reasons that should leave us feeling more whole in Christ, not more empty. Biblical looking back is always specific to see the hand of the King of Kings and ultimately praise Him.

My closet is so full of my youth and childhood, and it can make me feel just as I did when I had those things as a younger woman and a little girl. What do I do with all of these special things? I seldom recall they are there, but I was digging around looking for the certificate of the peg my husband bought me in the Ark. Back before the replica was built, when protests were mighty and funding was needed...when God's people prayed and prayed for Answers in Genesis and Ken Ham to be protected and successful, you could buy a part (sponsor it) and get a certificate and a number, and we're going soon and I want to see where my special peg is. I cried when I was given that gift. I loved the Ark project and longed to visit one day when it was built. Now it is time, and can I find that paper? I put it somewhere special.

No. I can't at the moment, but my bedroom is now full of nearly every keepsake of mine that was carefully squeezed into the closet. I've gone through all the keepsake boxes downstairs with well organized files of what actually was what the boxes said, all the school papers and art I saved from my 3 babies. In my distress and the house a bit of a shambles, my husband, who is the most resourceful man alive, found his receipt in his email from Dec 23, 2013 and printed the information needed so that we can all go to the area where my special peg is ♥. I'll surely find that certificate next year...

So here I am, at bedtime, tears just keep streaming down my face. Because my friend and those precious boys are gone. My dad is old and could pass at any time. My bedroom is literally a totally wreck with special memories that make me sad to look back on but I can't part with (envelopes and letters from my mom who died before I got married, for example). And I'm missing people I loved dearly who are gone and whose funeral cards are one of the things in a special box. (I hate death.) And I'm missing my sisters who I will probably never live very close to again.

I talked to them both today for the first time in AGES. It is my one sister's birthday, and the other has 2 new grandchildren and we just haven't had time to talk since she had to return to the office full time instead of working from home a lot. After 2 hours, we wrapped up that talk. I needed some comfort, and I wanted to tell her all the things...that's what a sister 9 yrs older can do...listen so well and care when I'm super sad.

I guess I need to ask God to help me get rid of things that only make me sad when I look back. And to help bind up my broken heart over all the people I've said goodbye to and miss a lot. And to remind me He has a plan for my life even though sometimes it feels like everyone else gets to move on and have adventure while I'm still here in the Burg. The reality is, the place I want to go a lot of the time doesn't exist. It is a time in the past mixed with the present, full of all the people and nearness and the wisdom of now but it was long ago, and that time can't be. It shouldn't be. It is a created place that never was and never will be. I'm here, now, serving the Lord, and need to trust Him in this new season. He will never leave me nor forsake me, and He won't leave you or forsake you if you belong to Him. What a good and loving God.

Now to Him who is ABLE to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us. To Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus now and forever, Amen. Eph 3:20-21

Churches in God's Revelation to John

I think it is interesting when studying the Revelation how we can see the problems in the churches of Ephesus, Pergamos, Thyatira and yet be unmoved in examining our own church and life of service. Even as the sins in these churches are specifically named, why is it we do not have specific examples of the problems that are relevant to now as we talk? Things are always theoretical and not specific, but Christ was very specific. I find it noteworthy also that when Christ has something against them, it was for sinning. Not a willy nilly condemnation on them being unwise, but what that lack of wisdom, or lack of faithfulness led to.

We know the messages about the churches are messages for us today. They should cause us to examine our own churches and our own lives and deal seriously with wrong thinking and teaching. Too often we keep things theoretical, as if we are looking through a glass pane at the past and taking note, but we don't really dig hard and say, "Is there a Jezebel in OUR church? Am I a Jezebel??"

Do we ask ourselves if WE have left our first love and thought through what that would look like, or do we assume that of course we haven't? Our service is from a heart of love for Christ and therefore we are never jealous or petty, we never withhold information so we appear to be in the "in" crowd. We aren't competitive with our fellow believers, playing in to the games some others play with having 'favorites'. We don't care if someone else got information first or was able to hold the baby or whatever. Our love for each other and Jesus is always before our own eyes....

Do we gloss over the sins of the people in the churches in Revelation and think we aren't represented really, but if we were to be, surely we are like Smyrna who was suffering for righteousness? Do any churches look at the Revelation and examine themselves and take action?

If I were to look at churches in America, I see things God could easily come and condemn them for. I could see Christ condemning the church for setting His vulnerable children under the teachings of mockers and scorners day and and day out (government schools). I cannot for the life of me picture God pleased with His people doing this, and I can certainly envision a much harsher condemnation for those who heartily approve of encouraging others to set their children under teaching that is contrary to God's truth, Creation, Christ's payment for our sin being of critical importance etc. I do not see God in Revelation condemning the churches for having unwise positions and leaving as a minor thing. He goes after how that lack of wisdom led to sinful behaviors. Is there even a genuine difference between doing something unwise and sinning? Is it acceptable for Christians who should know better to act unwisely? Does that get a pass?

We drink daily in front of our children, not to get drunk, but we set the example as a Christian. Does God slap our hand and say to the church who allows that sort of thing, "Bad idea but it was just unwise?" I don't see that sort of character in the Lord. I see clearly defined criticisms from Him, and we know He is serious about causing little ones to stumble.

Does putting impressionable children (of Christians) under the authority of the ungodly (also called wicked, depraved, rebellious) NOT constitute a stumbling block, particularly when the materials they use to teach leave God out and promote lifestyles abhorrent to the Creator? Does entrusting children made in the image of God to people who would have aborted them, or think they should be able to "change" their gender, or who practice homosexuality, or who deny God, who are unregenerate in general, is that like causing them to stumble and teaching them to sit among scoffers? What category does that fall into if not that?

I'm of the mindset that a huge blind spot in American Christianity is heartily approving of and using godless, government run schools to educate. I think we will see His judgment on this issue. The short-sighted want to say that position stems from results, claiming that kids from private schools and homeschools turn out unregenerate, too, so we can't criticize public schools. Who has said anything about RESULTS? I'm talking about the front end of decision making where wisdom and an understanding of our responsibility as parents to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord is supposed to lead. I'm not talking about results anywhere. Our obedience to the Lord is based on doing the right thing for the right reasons and we entrust results to Him.

I think another criticism God has in today's churches is the lack of caring what His word says and the lack of serious devotion to it. Too many churches want to entertain from the pulpit and I see that style no where in Scripture. We are flippant and concerned with socializing while we say we aren't!

Others can go so far as to cast doubt on the authority of Scripture even though they claim to be genuine churches. These institutions are focused on building their church and fellowshipping, not offending anyone.

There are problems with women leading and weak men allowing them to. There is a lack of leadership and those "stars" will be judged for letting factions come up or stifling their people's learning.

So many things....we have to examine ourselves and make sure we are not playing into whatever problems plague our own church. We can repent on behalf of the church body and ask God to convict and bring change, but it has to start somewhere. One person can make a difference.

I recommend watching the videos in the sidebar entitled The Children of Caesar by Voddie Baucham.

Repentance is Essential for Peace

When we sin it is often tempting to justify what we have done. We can find others who endorse our decision and help us think the situation through in a way that acquits us and casts blame or wrong thinking on others. But there is a wonderful gift the Christian has from God, the opportunity to have a peaceful conscious when we repent fully before God alone.

When our conscience is nagging us, it is often because we are searing it with continued wrong thinking. I even recall, before I was saved by the blood of Jesus Christ, how I felt when others tried to tell me that the sinful positions I felt 'stuck in' were OK. I remember people wanting me to be at peace and they felt sorrow over the turmoil I was in. They were of their father the devil, as was I at that time, and they were doing all they knew to do: help a friend feel better by assuring her that how she was and who she was WAS OK. What else can the world offer when very challenging issues present themselves?

I knew the lack of peace deep inside though. At first it felt like a helpful relief to be assuaged of guilt and sin. There is excitement that moving forward in 'freedom' can happen. But freedom to do things which are only sinful in nature is actually, bondage. And soon enough that happy emotion changes and the deep lack of peace sets back in.

The reality is, only Christ sets us free. Free to NOT sin habitually. Free to live in newness of life and do what pleases the Creator God. Wrong thinking keeps us in bonds. Christians who perpetuate wrong thinking hinder the work of the Lord and they lack the total peace He wants them to have, which is something that enables them to freely serve Him unconstrained.

How often do believers take up causes that do not glorify God, which CANNOT glorify Him by their very nature? Refusing to be conformed to Christ because of decisions they would regret if they'd let themself see the truth, they dig their heels in farther and farther, being sure they will convince others to see it their way, rather than let God help them handle the intense anguish over decisions that cannot be changed and which they regret and loathe the consequences they feel responsible for.

Here's a light example but you will see the point.

Fast Food can be prayed over to give us the nourishment we need but that will not alter the composition of the food and give it nutrients it lacks or remove what is harmful in it. The choice was made to eat the food and there are consequences to eating it. Even Chick Fil A is generally not going to be transformed chemically because of a prayer. God can do that or anything, but does He? The part that really matters is the decision made on the front end to eat it. As followers of Christ we're not to do what we want, where we want, and think a covering of prayer will make it ok. We don't think that right? And yet, how many times do parents act that way with the oversight of the precious children God has entrusted them with? Can parents follow whatever philosophy, and since they claim Christ, live as though the results will glorify Him? What about where those precious children created in the image of God are educated? Can we do whatever suits our fancy and pray over it and leave it at that? Will that fundamentally change something set against God? When we think of what is taught and exemplified in the government run schools (homosexuality, denying being made in God's image through gender denial, believing killing the unborn is OK, people living together with the opposite sex unmarried, the risk of abuse by a teacher or helper, godless curriculum, promoting religions that are contrary to Christianity etc etc), is it unwise to do what I just described, or is it wrong? Another word for wrong in the Christian's life is sin friends.

My conviction regarding government schools is similar to my conviction regarding Roman Catholicism. I wish I found something in Scripture to make me think differently. It is not pleasant to go against so many that hold a different view. But I simply cannot see it differently. Until or unless the government run schools in America completely change and humble themselves before God, I believe Christian parents must do all they can to keep their kids away from them. There is too much at stake. There is not wisdom in the multitude of counselors in godless institutions. Can and will God work when there is a single parent or a communist nation that doesn't allow parents to have their kids in Christian school or homeschool them? Of course, He is a father to the fatherless. His grace is sufficient, but that doesn't mean all I've charged parents to do isn't still true. Mothers are to be the gatekeeper of their home and over the lives of the vulnerable children entrusted to her care, and fathers are to be the priest, provider and protector of the home.

(I believe wisdom and careful discretion are needed if allowing a high school child to take a class in a public college or high school. For some older kids, it might be safe, but for others, it would not be. Let each go to God on that count and determine with their spouse the right course.)

But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil. 2 Thess 3:3

Parenting Tips From Dr. and Mrs. Iles

https://www.acl.org.au/blog/blog-mi-parentingtips/

I happily came upon these tips while looking up information about Martyn Iles, the new CEO of Answers in Genesis. We support and affirm AiG's message and ministry, and with two children at Cedarville University, were aware of the recent Living in Babylon tour. We were able to tune in while our children attended live, and it was the first time we'd heard Martyn speak. Needless to say, it's a comfort to see the Lord's provision in providing a competent successor when Ken Ham is no longer serving. Martyn is brilliant.

Regarding Ken and the late Buddy Davis, it's as though we grew up with them. Our children loved Buddy, and my husband and I were saved within AiG's first decade of existence. We've always been blessed to have excellent teaching regarding creationism. Henry Morris was a professor at Virginia Tech, where the Mr. and I came to know Christ as our Savior. We never knew Christianity without The Institute of Creation Research or the then-budding AiG. I recall clearly when we prayed for the Creation Museum to be built one day, and then the process of it finally coming to fruition. It was a project only God could oversee, and He did. Visiting with our children when they were small was incredible. I read every word of every sign (much to the chagrin of my "skimming" family!).

All this to say, these parenting tips are very good and I hope you'll aim for them!

Fall Updates at the Homestead ;)

It was always worth the wait.

33 succulent starts in cups, though 11 are multiples! Look for a pop up plant sale!

First attempt at growing cactus' from seed! Stay tuned!

Harvested rose hips today and made rose hip tea. The seeds are soaking and awaiting the long 3 months in the fridge so they can be planted next spring.

Cutting garden installed and planned by the eldest daughter! Can't wait to see what arrives in spring! New fence to come!

This looks like a mess but it is quite improved and will be mulched soon enough.

Fall plantings are emerging: peas and spinach.

Fall beets!

Intentional Parenting (series)

I happened upon this series while watching the Revelation podcasts. In starting the first one, I feel these can be recommended because Pastor Skelly referenced and recommended my favorite parenting book, Shepherding A Child's Heart by Ted Tripp.

Parenting goes so much better if you go about it in a way that honors the Lord. I hope you will take time to watch these. Perhaps on a Fri or Sat night with your spouse for a study time.

Unexpected Scenarios

It is taken for granted when children are young and parents are young, that we can influence our kids, protect them, and offer guidance and advice whenever it is warranted. It is very sad to see parents who are too busy to be with their young children, pursuing their own dreams to the exclusion of regular family time. This is one thing I loved about homeschooling; so much time together to talk and interact, though it takes effort to really connect of course.

I think one of the most difficult things older parents can experience is when their kids shut them out, and then make decisions that are not the best. Sometimes the decisions are dangerous or completely wrong. Adults, be they young or not-so-young, are free to do what they want. Wisdom seeks good counsel, which isn't always what is wanted. It isn't so wise to seek counsel from those who will tell us what we want to hear, or seek it from those who don't know us that well. When we seek counsel from many who don't know us, we might not get the hard truth we need to hear, because only those who deeply love us, or deeply love the Savior, will be bold enough to tell us the truth. People who aren't impacted by our decisions are often not invested enough in us to really lay it all out.

What I'm learning more as I age is that we cannot lose our peace when people shut us or our informed counsel out. We can only do what we can do, which sometimes is just cry out to God, and ask Him to watch over our loved ones. When we could save our loved ones from disaster or just a rough road, we can't care more than the person who is going to likely end up in a mess of their own doing. It is painful when we could help but are not asked, but we must humble ourselves before the Lord and remember as His children, He is loving us and caring for us, and ultimately we should desire to serve Him where and how He wants us to.

Stubborn self-reliance and pride have led more than one person down a wrong road. Yes, there is wisdom in a multitude of godly counselors, and at the same time, people who don't go to their own family for help can look like they don't actually have a support system. People may wonder, "Why isn't their family helping them? They must not have a close family to count on." If that is our situation, we can't help that there is a strong family available but not wanted. I'm not saying that one's family can provide all that is needed, but it can certainly save us from looking like a person who has no strong support system and MUST therefore RELY on friends or strangers.

When we're in need of help, we should go to God first, and then after talking and listening for His answer, we should go to those we trust the most to keep the condition of our hearts and walk with the Lord a top priority. After that, we can seek wise counsel from trusted friends we know have our back. God is a jealous God. He wants and deserves first place in our hearts.

New Things

I'm doing a Bible study at a nearby church, and it has been a fantastic reminder of why it is beneficial to interact with the larger body of Christ than your own backyard body, so to speak. It is like going on vacation and visiting a church, only better. Getting to meet sisters in Christ who otherwise would be strangers is deeply fulfilling. It gives me encouragement to see people I've never met, in my community, who also love God and want to glorify Him. I'm also learning different ways of running a large women's Bible study and I'm grateful for that. It is easy to get into a mindset that the way our own church does things is the way every church does things, and nothing is farther from the truth! There are many ways to skin a cat, as they say. Who 'they' are is certainly up for query...and why would anyone want to skin a cat??

The point is, staying in our own routine can be stifling and discouraging. Praying with believers who are new friends is a joy. Studying and learning from godly women you've only met is a gift. Of course, I'm doing this study at a trusted nearby church. :)

Is It Really The Answer?

You know when you've had a difficult thing going on in life and you are looking for an answer, and finally it comes? A child vomits for hours each night for months and one day the mystery ends: they have a food allergy. Someone you love stops talking to you and with no communication, there is a real question in your mind about what happened. It turns out they were diagnosed with something serious and it made their world turn upside down and inside out immediately.

Whatever the scenario, I'm reminded that very often in life we go through challenging times. We seek answers because we want to fix the situation or at least make the best of it. If nothing else, we just want to know what is happening and have some semblance of an explanation. The "not knowing" is grueling.

What I want to touch on tonight is when we think we're given an answer that is going to lead to a decent resolution or solution. When we think that whoever gave the answer actually can help.

We are complex beings made in the image of God, and we have numerous systems in play at all times. Our bodies function in ways that are mysterious. Some systems are understood well, but others are not. There is a great deal yet to be truly understood about how the systems interact with one another and what it is that really makes us tick and what makes us sick. Why does a germ make one person ill and not another? We can say it is the immune system, but what of the deeper understandings of why. on one day this happens but another it wouldn't? How much does stress break us down and make us vulnerable? What about diet and even our own preconceived notions?

I've read that in this era of depression and the multiplicity of mental health diagnoses, we are seeing far more mental health issues than we used to in spite of some doctors (most) claiming we know how to deal with those sorts of problems now. People aren't less anxious with all these "solutions", they are far MORE anxious. The answers to depression have not eradicated depression, rather the number of cases has exploded. Logic would make us consider we don't have a cure or a good way of managing this. Logic would suggest the solutions are making things worse.

Where should we put our trust and hope? Do 'they' really know the cure for these things they like to tell us we have?

Just because a doctor looks at a set of conditions and professionally puts a label on them, does not mean he knows how to then remedy things! Often doctors are irresponsible or are of the opinion we won't be "helped" until we GET a diagnosis so they give one to keep us busy or silence us. Often they follow the training they've had that this plus this equals this...label it and then start experimenting.

We have to understand that every human being is unique, and if we allowed the mental health "experts" to label everyone, no one would be normal. Everyone would have some condition or ailment. It is the nature of the industry and it begs the question, has this way of looking at society helped us? Are we healthier and happier than before this new trend started, as a society? A nation?

There is so much experimental treatment of people with mental health diagnoses, it is really criminal what doctors often do. Mind altering treatments are not new to this era, but the difference from the past is that we often know we're permanently changing someone's brain.

I understand wanting to have hope, wanting to feel in control again after so much time out of control, but no human understands us as well as God. Sin and living outside of God's ways leads to all manner of ailments: physical, mental and emotional. Until we are right with God, we should hold off on any "treatments" because sin is often the root cause of our problems. God is in the healing business and there aren't devastating side effects to His methods. He loves us and knows just how we work. Nothing is outside of His realm and understanding. He truly will DO NO HARM.

There is real hope in Christ and His payment for sin. He brings wholeness, peace, love, joy and patience into our hearts. His Word and truth renews our minds. Doctors and medicine cannot do what He alone can do, and they often just guess and try different things, sometimes leaving a person far worse off than they started. No doctor can renew our mind. "If then you've been raised with Christ, seek those things which are above where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things of the earth, for you have died and hidden your life in God. When Christ who is our life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory." Colossians 3 I believe...

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Pr 3:5-6

With that I'll exhort us all to remember this reason so many are in the straight they are in. As a people: We want change, but we won't change.

We must change if we want different results. No medication or doctor can bring that about. The Word of God can. Let the Word of God richly dwell with in you and may your spirit, soul and body be preserved complete, without blame, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen and amen.

Working at Home and Homeschooling

I stumbled upon this article regarding homeschooling moms working from home. It could apply to anyone trying to be home and working with small children though.

The Secret Of Life

I saw this on Facebook, a site I rarely go to but I wanted to read about the new campground coming to my area. Read this little tale and think it's good.
===========================
A father used to say to his children when they were young: —When you all  reach the age of 12  I will tell you the secret of life. One day when the oldest turned 12, he anxiously asked his father what was the secret of life. The father replied that he was going to tell him, but that he should not reveal it to his brothers.
—The secret of life is this: The cow does not give milk. "What are you saying?" Asked the boy incredulously. —As you hear it, son: The cow does not give milk, you have to milk it. You have to get up at 4 in the morning, go to the field, walk through the corral full of manure, tie the tail, hobble the legs of the cow, sit on the stool, place the bucket and do the work yourself.
That is the secret of life, the cow does not give milk. You milk her or you don't get milk. There is this generation that thinks that cows GIVE milk. That things are automatic and free: their mentality is that if "I wish, I ask..... I obtain."

"They have been accustomed to get whatever they want the easy way...But no, life is not a matter of wishing, asking and obtaining. The things that one receives are the effort of what one does. Happiness is the result of effort. Lack of effort creates frustration."
So, share with your children from a young age the secret of life, so they don't grow up with the mentality that the government, their parents, or their cute little faces is going to give them everything they need in life.

Remember:

"Cows don't give milk; you have to work for it."
