Public Schools Blocking Withdrawals?

Public Schools Blocking Freedom

We knew this would happen.... Around 40% of parents now want to homeschool their kids, on top of the 2.5 million parents already taken ownership of their children's education, and, to no one's surprise, some public school districts are pushing back.

Freedom is at stake here and in focus. This sort of thing can only happen in states that require permission to homeschool or require people to get permission to withdraw from the government schools. Not all states operate like that.

Bear in mind, homeschooling isn't for everyone. It is a huge responsibility and a serious one, much like parenting, which many these days seem to phone in. Private schooling might be a better option for some families. Know thyself!

Thankfully in Virginia we don't need permission to homeschool. We just need to send the superintendent notification of our plan to homeschool. The Home Educators Association of Virginia (HEAV) is the place to start and also is where to get the Notice of Intent form. Joining them is a great idea as well as The Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA).

Cast Sheep-Psalm 23:2 A Sermon Regarding God's Beautiful Care of His Sheep by Pastor Darrin Wright

Cast Sheep

Pastor Darrin was in Psalm 23 before the COVID-19 pandemic struck the US. He left that subject to take us through Ephesians during the hard days of separation, but now that his church has been able to restart services, he went back to where he was.

This sermon is about God's careful care of His sheep. For the believer, it is a comfort like none other: to understand the ways of God toward us.

For the lost, it can show you what God is offering and that it isn't too late to turn to Him in repentance.

YMCA: Through my years

When I was pregnant with my second child, I joined the YMCA in Rhode Island. I didn't want a repeat pregnancy and delivery, so getting in better shape mattered! It was amazing how the Lord used that time in my life. My oldest had fun in the nursery, and I got a break from the long days of caring for a young toddler.

During that time of getting in physical shape, the instructor taught me something that revolutionized my firstborn and really helped my parenting--it was regarding the effects high fructose corn syrup had on some kids. My daughter had steady behaviors for the most part, but I was noticing random ramp-ups in emotion and their being difficulty bringing those emotions back down. Because of her food allergies, I was used to keeping a very watchful eye on her eating. We weren't big processed food people or sweet-eating people, but lollipops had come on the scene as a treat every so often. It didn't take long for me to see a direct effect after the lollipop that looked a lot like what that Y instructor shared. Sure enough, cutting out HFCS ended those sudden flare ups and difficult-to-control emotions. It was many years later our acupuncturist tested this daughter and said her issue was with food dyes. Those candies all had dye, but I was still thankful to have avoided HFCS with my kiddos. We moved out of New England a few years later, a family of 5, but that teacher was a game changer and I'm so thankful.

Twelve years ago I rejoined the YMCA here in Virginia. I'd hit the gym early before our homeschool day started. It saved my sanity to have that time before a full day of educating, cooking, cleaning and training children. When the kids reached middle school and I entered my late 30's, I injured myself and couldn't use the YMCA. I was spending a lot of time and money on recovery efforts, so the Y stopped.

It would not be less than 7 years before the Y re-entered our lives. Health needs drove the decision this time, which is no surprise. We were in our mid forties and had learned a great deal about nutrition and the importance of moving our bodies. The Lord used the Y yet again to bless us, not just me directly, but this time, my husband.

Suddenly, a little more than a year after joining and regularly using our Y (even during the pandemic through the Virtual 360 workouts), I've got fresh hope to fix some long standing problems I've had. As when my second baby was on the way, a very unexpected blessing has come to me through an amazing personal training gift and trainer.

Maybe one day I'll be strong all over and have better mobility. It is hard to imagine, but not hard to remember my younger self...it is kind of funny to me to sit back and see that the YMCA has been a common thread of blessing in my life. When I was just starting out with marriage and children I couldn't say that since our journey with them was new...but after more than 20 years and three separate times of joining and using the Y, I can say it :).

Holding out hope~

So Great a Salvation-Excellent Sermon Series on the Trinity

Pastor Darrin is working toward his PhD and this series was part of an assignment. We were blessed. Mightily. Capturing what the Lord is teaching us through Ephesians 1:3-14 is life changing. Listen, then listen again...and have your Bible out so you can read God's word for yourself and allow the Spirit of God to reveal His truth to your mind and heart.

Whether you are doing dishes, weeding, walking, cleaning, folding laundry...tune in for some in-depth teaching on some very important verses in Scripture.

Perspective Change-Relationships

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Isaiah 26:3 KJV

Have you ever been a certain way, wanted to change, but just couldn't 'get there'? I had a strong hold in my life that God began revealing when we we moved here to VA 14 years ago. It involved relationships and how I dealt with them. It is clear in reading through many posts from 2012-2014 that relationships and pain were a big, regular part of my psyche.

What I couldn't have remembered without these blog posts is how hurt I often was by the actions of loved ones. I can see that my perspectives weren't based on nothing...there were definitely things that would happen which were legitimately wrong, for lack of a better word. But in the last several years, God has taught me that regardless of what others do, my perspective makes all the difference. I needed to get my needs met by Him alone and take whatever came my way in the form of other relationships.

An old friend of mine had shared with me that she needed to change her expectations of people in her life, and then Bible study after Bible study chipped away at my overly emotional responses to situations with others, which were often rooted in too much 'self'. An older woman I really respect was taught by one of her bosses that pastor's wives shouldn't really have friends...and the why of that slowly became more and more clear to me and gelled with my own views.

After my close friend committed suicide, God finally got through to me after more than 10 years of loving me enough to keep bringing this problem to the forefront of my life. The freedom I've found is hard to put in to words. No longer do I look for, want, or expect other people to fill voids in my life, whether family or friends. My emotions are no longer on my sleeve; I don't give people access to every part of my emotional being as I used to.

It has been a 14 year process of change and growth, and I'm so grateful God did not give up on me. A song I wrote as a child has come to my mind so many times as I've contemplated posting this summary.

Here is one part of the song: People will let you down, look for a smile find a frown. When you feel all alone, no place to call your home...turn to the Lord...

When I made that song up it evoked so many emotions. Now it just resonates as the truth in it has become part of the bedrock of who I am as a woman.

Homeschooling Statistics and Research-based Information

With unprecedented numbers of parents considering home educating their children for the 2020-2021 school year, I wanted to share some statistics regarding home education. This is not public school at home. Homeschooling involves parent-taught or parent-directed learning, and falls under different statutes for each state than the government funded schools.

Science Resources

I've recently been inspired to share some resources for providing a biblically sound science education for children of all ages.

Wonders of Creation 9 Book Set I loved this for extra reading materials. It can also be used for a curriculum. See more below.

Master Books Curriculum Options

Berean Builders
I respect Dr. Jay Wile and this something new he's done. It is a new elementary science curriculum and one of Cathy Duffy's top picks. I've looked his new Discovering Design with Chemistry and it is great, particularly for students who will go through the book primarily on their own. Essentially it is the 3rd edition of Apologia's 2nd ed. Chemistry, which he wrote. (Apologia hired someone else to do their 3rd edition Chemistry, and we don't love it as much as Dr. Wile's materials. There are problems with significant figures not being consistently and clearly explained with Apologia's 3rd edition Chemistry).

Moody Science DVDs These do a terrific job showing science and the logical conclusion there is a Creator. A fun way to treat the kids after a good day of school!

Apologia Science I loved Jeannie Fulbright's elementary science as well as Apologia's General Science, Physical Science, Biology and 2nd ed. Chemistry.

Did Governor Northam Star in The Sound of Music?

You know that scene when the Von Trapp family is sneaking away from their residence in the hope of escaping the new position 'offered' to Captain Von Trapp? Herr Zeller catches them clearly in traveling clothes and it takes some convincing for him to believe enough of their story to let them go. This was after the Anschluss. The parents explain how they are going to sing in the Festival and they were wearing their costumes, they show HZ the program for the Festival and how their names are written therein...Herr Zeller goes in to a bit of a fit telling them they WILL sing in the festival, but only because it is the way HE wants it to be.

One cannot help what comes to one's mind in times such as this.

Poll: Parents ‘More Likely’ to Homeschool Post-COVID

Shock Poll: Parents ‘More Likely’ to Homeschool Post-COVID: We're about to see a huge sea change in education as parents realize that homeschooling can be done much faster than traditional school....

I'm very thankful we could homeschool. My kids got so much time to play and learn other skills during the elementary years. School did not take nearly as long as it does in traditional schools. It is terrible to me to have kids in a building for 8 hrs and then give them more work at home. There is not nearly enough time for proper playing, rest, time outdoors...it is just go, go, go.

Middle school and high school take longer, naturally. Upper high school, since it involves dual-enrollment courses, takes all day, but that is time spent learning and working, not wasted time that still leaves hours of homework. The majority of my kids' learning has been done 8 am to 5 pm Mon-Fri. There are some evenings and some weekends that require time for school, and some days folks would start earlier in the morning, but they set their pace and make their schedule. All good skills.

I'd never trade those younger years for brick and mortar school. Buy a smaller house, go down to one car, move to a cheaper area...it is worth it to be able to have one parent raising the kids, to include educating them.

Lordship Salvation? The Oft Misunderstood Label

Lordship Salvation? What John Piper Explains About this Misleading Label

I'm not sure when I saved this letter to my bookmarks, but I just happened upon it and read through. I think it is good. It is troubling to me how many people seem to think that because at a particular point in time they acknowledged God, or perhaps walked down the aisle at a church to 'be saved', they are right with God despite openly engaging in unrepentant sin. The Bible is clear about true believers bearing fruit, being distressed over sin, responding a certain way when confronted with sin (repentant and demonstrating we are changing directions...). This notion of being saved but Christ not being Lord?? It was interesting to read what some people say about their conversion. We do no one any favors by buying into their being saved when they make lifestyle choices that disobey God, don't honor Him with their time/talents/finances, speak in a way that doesn't bring honor to Him, have no desire to worship Him... likewise, it is sad to think there are people who think that Christ isn't Lord from the moment they believe. He IS Lord whether we think so or not. Our obedience or disobedience doesn't change His position. He is Lord over the life of every true believer, to their blessing or not...

Sociology of COVID-19: Masks, Social Distancing...My Observations

Since the pandemic began and the subsequent quarantine, I've found it an intriguing study of different human behaviors. My guess is that many among us could write about this subject. These are simply my own perceptions and observations.

Initially when the news broke out about the pandemic, I think most of us were concerned. There was good reason to be. We didn't fully know what the seriousness was of the COVID-19 virus and a multitude of facts were slow in coming and often changed. For days we all watched to learn what the symptoms were--did there have to be a fever? was pink eye a symptom? what about the coughing...dry or wet? What? Fever ISN'T necessary?! Are you serious? It was tough to differentiate the flu, allergies, a cold, or this mysterious and frightening virus that was sometimes reported to have been responsible for large family groups dying.

It was a subject easy to talk about because everyone was on the same page. But then something started to change. The liberal news seemed to be taking an angle that differed a little from lesser known news outlets. People began to question if the lockdown was needed. People began attacking others who had different opinions openly, verbally, on Facebook and Nextdoor.com about the wearing of masks.

The wearing of masks has been a fascinating evolution. In the beginning I remember seeing people wearing them and at that time reports said they did not help. It rather made me uncomfortable seeing people wearing them... Was I missing something??

Then masks were reported to help and we were implored to wear them. It has been said that if you care about your fellow man, don the mask! So we all got them and I wore one. The weeks passed and by this time we were about 6 weeks in to the pandemic. Things started to feel different when out in society. In conversations, friends would do a bit of a feel out to see where I stood. There were those that fell in to the camp of believing everything as it was reported by the mainstream media, and I was seeing a group that clearly questioned that outlet and brought up points to consider such as the fact they knew no one who'd contracted COVID-19. Masks became a hotly debated topic from time to time. I continued wearing one incase it helped and for the mental state of those who are panicked about getting COVID-19. The nastiness of people who think they must be worn really became clear though. I'm sadly amazed at how fearful people are and how quick they are to turn on their fellow man for having a different opinion on something. People on Stafford Talk, who say to wear a mask if you care, would then say those who don't wear them shouldn't get medical treatment. Wow! That's love!?

As far as no one knowing anyone who truly tested positive for COVID-19, most people believe it is a real virus. I certainly do. We have all heard stories about people dying from it or being very sick, but our hospitals have been rather empty and nurses aren't all working. People have started to not wear masks, or they'll start with a mask and when one person takes theirs off, others follow suit. It seems like more people I interact with are wearing them for the comfort of others who truly feel better if everyone is wearing them. The reason for this is that people are questioning how locked down we still are and this lockdown went in the first place. Bad choices or choices that seem born out of a desire to control, make people question motives. I was in MD recently and learned people have dubbed their Governor, "Lockdown Larry". That is not because they don't think the virus is real, but they question his motives and methods.

It has continued to be interesting to me to hear people at a higher risk than me want to hug or comment on the mask being a negative because we're continually breathing our own oxygen depleted air.

So now we have a new social question, "Are you hugging?" We have to be bold to say, "Not really." if we aren't comfortable. This virus is real, but we need to remember humanity is suffering in ways far worse than from a virus. The elderly are dealing with loneliness and some are struggling with depression for the first time in their lives. Living forever isn't going to happen for any one of us, and I'm seeing that me taking a personal risk is far more important in the grand scheme of things during this pandemic. Our own personal safety can't always rule the day if we are followers of Christ.

A terrific evangelist preached our evening service tonight, and the gist of his message was that we cannot live in fear as Christians. We ought to take wise precautions, but to live in fear is not something ever right for a follower of Christ. I agree.

We need to take the time to see those around us, those people God has put in our circle of influence, and reach out to them as best we can.

Importance of Celebrating Christ's Birth- Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

The Promise Fulfilled

In this sermon taken from the first verses in Matthew, the great reformed pastor, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, explains the importance of celebrating the birth of Christ.

If you are unfamiliar with Dr. Lloyd-Jones, here is a brief biography of him. Iain Murray, his secretary for many years, wrote a terrific two-volume set on MLJ if you'd care to learn more. He was a brilliant man, and while I do not share all of the same theology as he, his sermons are among those I listen to with some frequency. I've also enjoyed his book, Studies in the Sermon on the Mount (see Goodreads list on sidebar for more info).

Will a Severe Economic Depression Come?

We were discussing this tonight...how printing money can lead to utter disaster if there is ever a significant course correction. Then I got in bed for some nighttime reading and found this poignant article from Bitcoin.

Family Foundation--Babies Born Alive Need Protection From Being Killed by the Left

5/13/20 letter from the Family Foundation...this came a month after I posted this about 1984.

Dear J Dub,

This pandemic has only heightened the need for Americans to search for voices they can trust to cut through the noise and give them the facts about what's really going on.
You and I have long known that we cannot trust the Left or their allies in the mainstream media to present the truth -- especially on our shared values of faith, family, and freedom.
What we see daily from the Left brings to mind George Orwell's classic novel 1984. That story of a futuristic society that censors truth introduced the idea of "doublespeak," which is language that obscures, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words.
Sound familiar? A prime-time example came up on CNN earlier this spring.
In late February, 41 pro-abortion senators voted down the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

This isn't even a bill that deals directly with abortion policy. It merely prevents infanticide by ensuring that health care practitioners provide the same life-saving care to an infant who survives an abortion as they would for any other baby born at the same gestational age.
Keeping with the liberal talking points, one CNN reporter coined a new phrase while reporting on that Senate bill. Rather than accurately referring to a newborn baby who just took his first breath, the reporter said the bill concerned "a fetus that was born."
When it comes to human life, count on the Left to keep using "doublespeak" at every opportunity. To admit the truth about lives in the womb is a direct threat to their worldview.
FRC is informing believers like you and equipping and encouraging people to take a stand. Your financial support helps promote a biblical message of truth!

We Will Still Not Be Shaken- Pastor Darrin

Pastor Darrin's love for the people God has entrusted him to shepherd comes out through the careful attention he gives to proclaiming biblical truths. This brief 7 minute message brings the quarantine period full circle as we all plan to re-enter society more fully in the coming days. I hope you'll take time to view.

We Will Still Not Be Shaken-Ps 16

In addition to the short message above, I wanted to share the Wednesday night study Pastor Darrin has been doing for April and May. It is on the life of John Flavel and lessons from Scripture we learn on how to deal with suffering. In the days we've just come through and surely in the days ahead, Pastor Darrin has wanted to equip believers to rightly deal with suffering. During the 8 weeks of quarantine, we have enjoyed the services from our own home church, but also the two weekly services with First Baptist.  I  thank God for this extra time to dig into His word in this manner.

Remembering John "Tom" Thomas Weinberger Jr. : Death and Marriage During COVID-19 Pandemic

There are things in life that generally require, or strongly recommend, other peoples' involvement, whether it be for celebrating, remembering, or helping. But then a pandemic strikes and officials take precautions, severely limiting how we can celebrate or remember. Some guidelines seem valid, while others seem to miss important details and do more harm than good.

We've recently witnessed parents having to miss their daughter's wedding. She was a beautiful bride with a gorgeous, elegant, modest wedding gown. I was struck by the beauty of it hanging in her soon to be mother-in-law's upstairs foyer the day before the ceremony. The pure white color and style of the gown communicated a lot about the bride and her choices leading up to this momentous day in her life.

The wedding was supposed to be overseas, yet due to travel difficulties, all of the plans she'd made were changed. Not only was there not a college graduation ceremony for her family to attend here in the States, her wedding occurred here instead of in her home country, without anyone in her family attending. What should have been one of the biggest events for her parents, relegated them to a live stream participation.

As with many things where God is present though, there was a lovely take-away from the situation. This young couple's commitment to honor God in relation to the marriage covenant didn't need verbalizing. Circumstances changed everything, and the reality of being ready to marry took precedence over their secondary desires. It has served as a reminder to me that there are hard choices to make when you follow God; hard on one hand... but easy on another. As a follower of God, what we're to do isn't difficult to figure out. The obeying can still be tough, but when it is the Lord whom you serve, it is always right to go with God and He will bring blessings in His way and time. This situation has really helped us keep everything with this pandemic in perspective.

Contrasting the joy and sorrow of a wedding that happened very differently than planned, like many others in this nation, we have lost a loved one during the pandemic quarantine period. This past Friday, May 8th, we said goodbye, from afar, to one of our kids' grandfathers. Tom was a part of our family for nearly 20 years. I met him in my mother-in-law's kitchen and he quickly gave the impression of being a nice man that was easy to be around. His warm hugs and gentle demeanor were a blessing. He named our groundhog at Massanutten, and we can't go there without thinking about him and recalling some funny times. He loved animals and the simple things in life...the shore, crabs, time with friends, humor...I never stressed about making food for him, which is rare for me. He wasn't a hard person to please and he wasn't one to sit around complaining or gossiping. He was encouraging and put people at ease.

We couldn't visit Tom during the last two months of his life due to COVID-19 restrictions, and sadly the last time we did visit he may not have remembered. Now there is a funeral of sorts, a 'window visitation', and that is all the closure we'll get to have. How quickly life comes to an end, and not being able to remember together and honor the memory of one so loved is difficult.

I'm very sad to have not gotten to talk to one last time before the surgery that led to all of this.

We will miss you, Tom. And we love you.

What is the Rapture?

Scripture tells us that God will remove the body of Christ before the final destruction of the world. We look at 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 as well as the way God saved Noah and his family in the Ark while destroying the world through the worldwide flood. Often God's wrath is poured out on all of mankind-the just and the unjust. However, when He has exercised final judgment such as with the destruction of Sodom and the worldwide flood, the righteous were removed.

Christ could come for His church at any time. There are no more prophesies that need to be fulfilled for Him to come, and I look very forward to His calling us to meet Him in the air.

16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thess 4:16-18

11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against [a]flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Eph 6:11-13

Working Out During COVID-19 (LINKS UPDATED)

It seems like people are either working out more during this time of being at home, or packing on some pounds. Many I know are taking to the weights, or in our case, the plethora of videos. Above is a good tabata workout with Raneir Pollard.

I've heard others say, "If you are moving, you're winning!" Just do something, even if you can't do it all as they are!

This YMCA channel and this YMCA channel have some great workouts. We've been doing a lot of Angela Williams' workouts and they are really fun. She is tough! Naomie Campbell has some terrific Therapeutic Chair workouts for those who might need something less strenuous on the legs but are still seeking a good exercise.

Here is a nice Tabata with Angela: https://youtu.be/0UQdVzj-tv4

The Federalist: Why Christian Kids Don't Belong in Public Schools

Why Christian Kids Don't Belong in Public Schools-The Federalist

Ignoring that there is ideology and worldview wrapped up in education does not negate the negative impacts that those ideologies bring. I know it is unpleasant to think of such things...it is nice when we in society are all on the same page. Sadly, the truth is, there is no such thing as neutral education.

The Bible tells us we are to be as shrewd as serpents yet innocent as doves. When I think of education, I always think of this verse as well as Luke 6:40. There are world forces in play that we cannot stem simply by wanting to, or giving a measure of mental ascent to.

Just as a sapling will grow in the direction the gentle, yet steady, breeze urges, so our children will grow based on the worldview of their educational years. Is God given glory and woven into all subject matter, or is self-reliance, positive self-esteem, and humanism really the foundation being laid? What is our own foundation, if we take time to examine it carefully, in light of God's word?

It is a humbling exercise to see how my own thinking is still impacted by my public school education. The issue of worldview is so pervasive, most of us fail to see our own humanistic undercurrents. It takes regularly rubbing up against those whose worldview is more biblical to gradually see where ours actually aligns more with those who deny God and His truth. It takes bringing every thought into captivity under the careful eye of God and the truth in His word. He has given us resources and leaders to explain these things to help us all. I've posted several videos on my side bar for just this reason. Ken Ham and Pastor Voddie Baucham know what the deal is, and they care enough about the church of God to tell it to us straight. Isn't that what love is?

Virginia Reopening Slowly ...What the Governor Has Been Up To...What We've Been Up To...

I feel pretty confident not being alone in noticing a change in people's attitudes here in Virginia about 2 weeks ago, so about April 20th. Suddenly it was as if everyone had really had enough of not seeing other people due to COVID-19 restrictions. It wasn't that everyone was unconcerned about contracting it, rather, folks started to feel like the gamble was becoming necessary. Traffic increased  and people started to get creative with getting together from a safe distance without breaking the law.

Virginia shut down gatherings of more than 10 people March 17th and gave law officials the ability to enforce that; March 23rd the non-essential businesses closed and on March 30th a stay-at-home order was issued. There was no where to go other than a handful of places so people were staying in mostly anyway before the March 30th order (see how busy the governor has been here).

During this time the Governor has made it easier to have an abortion (April 10), has tightened gun control laws (April 10), has 'dramatically decreased the jail population' by reintroducing low level criminals into society en masse (April 17th), and has made Virginia the first southern state to offer LGBTQ people protections with jobs, housing etc. April 11th. (I can't see why God wouldn't ease up on our suffering here...)

Apparently 6 weeks of not being around others, 4 of those which had everyone basically house bound, was the tipping point. The occasional naysayer of anything communal will still spout off on Stafford Talk (Facebook) about how EVERYONE needs to STAY HOME forever and ever if they care at all about their fellow man, some going so far as to say health services should be denied to people who go around others and contract it (guess the initial love motivating those folks can die out pretty fast). Some people have trouble realizing how devastating this shut down is economically on their fellow citizens and our nation as a whole.

The economic impact of COVID-19 is why I think China lied to the world and kept this virus quiet in December, January and February as much as they could. I think it is why the doctor there who started to talk about letting people know this virus was dangerous suddenly contracted COVID and died even though in his age bracket he should have recovered. I believe China shut down internet searches about COVID to ensure it would spread to other nations, specifically America, so they would not be the only nation suffering so much from the virus. You've probably heard these thoughts from others; they didn't originate with me but I agree with them.

I can tell you, my memories of why I used to try to avoid buying things "Made in China" have resurfaced, albeit 25 years after their initial birth after too long of an absence. I'm reminded afresh of what Communists leaders have done in the past with propaganda and lying (Potemkin villages anyone?). We have been lulled to sleep as our schools and universities fail to teach true history and have been concerned only with the cheapest products we can find (Do you know secular colleges do not even have traditional US History courses anymore? You'll discover this if your student takes a bonafide US History course at a Christian college and seeks to transfer it to a public university--there is no direct transfer. Public universities no longer teach traditional art history classes either like someone would have had 20+ yrs ago...the prowess of our nation and Western civilizations is heavily downplayed now...)

Anyway, I can tell you that not only is there a change in our being able to continue not being with friends, I hear it in many conversations from those who have not had the opportunity to leave for anything other than the grocery store, which I think we all agree stopped being fun some time ago. Fifty-one days of essentially being on your own property is a long time. There is only so much yard work and home repairs that can be done (we've done PLENTY and hired out numerous jobs during these weeks...how nice to have strangers here hammering or soldering...fresh people!)

At first this forced COVID rest was a relief for some people; many of us were wore out with all the running, all the time. Some people didn't realize it until a few weeks in...they found they liked less obligation out of the house. Some people will never tire of being home with nothing to do. For those who needed a break, we've now had time to recover, tackle long-standing work that needed doing or which we wanted to do. Things are clean...really clean. The one thing that hasn't been made right, whether you are tired of being home or could do it forever though, is worship. Live streaming does not count as church; we need to be with other believers. God tells us to be; we are not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together. He outlines the purpose of the church and the roles within the church. There are gifts God gives us that are to be exercised within the church body. And these restrictions are preventing the church from operating as God has ordained. Church isn't optional for the believer--we are to be members of a church, accountable to one another, and under the authority of the church leadership.

So Virginia is gradually starting back up May 15th officially, but churches are still closed at this point until who knows when...It is doubtful June 10th will mean we can resume as usual given the 2-3 weeks for each of the 3 re-opening phases. Let's hope we can phase in something though, before June 10th.

DIY Brick Rocket Stove - Cooking Without Electrical Power

Here's a fun little project you might enjoy playing around with during this time of still not being out and about much due to COVID-19 restrictions. There are numerous rocket stove designs and options. This is my favorite due to not needing to buy any anything other than the bricks. In my cursory research, these bricks are not likely to explode under the heat this stove would generate, but you could use fire bricks if preferred. Tip: petroleum jelly on a cotton ball is a great fire starter. Put that in with whatever tinder you're using and light.

This couple is sweet, though I'm new to them so have only watched this video and the one explaining how they ended up living 'tiny'. They have a new YouTube Channel ♥ I hope to check out soon!

John MacArthur on The Rapture and Resurrection

The Rapture and Resurrection, single sermon by John MacArthur

Series from Dr. John MacArthur: The Rapture and the Day of the Lord

A nice topic to ponder during this Covid-19 pandemic. The food and supply shortages, power of the weather, out-of-the-blue Harvard University attack on homeschooling when the entire nation has been forced to finish school at home, Virginia rolling back numerous laws that protected the unborn, Virginia tightening gun control laws, and speed at which the nation shut down (though killing the unborn remained essential nearly everywhere) have reminded me that God is the One who is Sovereign. This present world is ruled by Satan, and it is wise to realize venues he utilizes. Overall, it is wisest to be right with God. If a global pandemic won't make you do what God says....well, this sermon or the series linked above is one you might care to listen to.

Only those truly in Christ will be raptured before the 7 year tribulation period begins. For 3.5 yrs the world will seem to prosper, but then the Abomination of Desolation will occur at the site of the Temple Mount and the anti-Christ will be fully revealed for who he is. Up until then people will think he is wonderful--the deception will swallow up nearly everyone. Then for 3.5 yrs it will be terrible and the only way people will be saved from eternal damnation will be through martyrdom. Does that sound like a plan that comes from a God who will let just anyone into eternal rest with Him?

Take a few minutes to read 1 Cor 6 for a few commands of the Lord; things that show where our hearts are and who our God is (us or Him).

"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter." Matt 7:21

One May Surprise You-- 10 Planks of the Communist Manifesto

Ten Planks of the Communist Manifesto

Donna Calvin posted this write up I've linked to above in 2011. She reposted someone else's work a man by the name of Kirk Elliot. What I most wanted to share is the origin of public (government) education.

Government sponsored education is a newer concept in the history of the world, and it is not good. We need to understand, at least on a rudimentary level, the forces of the enemy that work in direct opposition to God, particularly in the lives of children.

Public education has its roots in Communism. The underlying thought is that the government should have more control over children and their minds than parents. Individual thought is a disruption on the conveyor belt of a thrifty working class that thinks as it is told to think. If the authority of God can be undermined, the world is the oyster of the secular humanist.

Harvard Has Temporarily Cancelled Anti-Homeschooling Summit

Harvard Law Cancels Private Anti-homeschooling Summit

We'll keep an eye out for this to be rescheduled. Meanwhile, the same day the Harvard Kennedy School of Government hosted a Disinformation Campaign regarding homeschooling that was live recorded on Facebook, the announcement came forth.

Perhaps Professor Bartholet will look up some facts before the new summit is scheduled. Ideally she will realize how insulting she has been toward homeschoolers, and rescind her accusations about us and HSLDA.

Nutshell of Today's Disinformation Campaign by Harvard Kennedy School of Government

In a nutshell, the issue at hand regarding homeschooling in the USA is this: are parents guilty until proven innocent, or as with everything else in this nation, are we innocent until proven guilty?

What this means for educating and decisions regarding our own children is this: do parents have the right to make choices for their children's education? Those of us opposed to Elizabeth Bartholet and her vague, unfounded concerns about homeschooling parents would say that, "Yes, parents have the implicit right to make educational decisions for their own children." There are loads of facts to demonstrate the success of home educated kids over their public school peers, regardless of the parent's level of education. Public school children are bullied and often abused by teachers, and many take their kids out of public schools for that reason. It is terribly irresponsible for Bartholet to imply that homeschooling parents do so for any reason other than love for their kids. She and the government do not love people's children more than parents, and our right to make choices for our kids has been around long before the federal government came on the scene.

Not convinced, think of it this way:

Should we force Catholic parents to pull their kids from Catholic school and put then in an evangelical Christian school? Should Jewish kids be forced to go to a Catholic school? Should atheists be forced to send their kids to a Christian school? Should people who disagree with public education be forced to send their kids to those schools? The clear answer is 'no'; no parent should be forced to educate their kids in a way they disagree with.

Education takes many forms, and there should be freedom in that. It is an important part of understanding the differences with people, and especially children. Schools cannot possibly meet the needs of every child and family. If you want to send your kids to a government-run school with all of its ideologies, feel free. I'm certainly not going to force you to do otherwise. But to say that the government or 'professional' teachers are needed to give kids a solid education--please, you'll never convince me of that. There are too many studies showing the contrary, and I've known many well educated homeschooled individuals.

Favorite Sermon Series

What better time to draw near to God than during a global pandemic where some lawmakers are pushing agendas God opposes? If we won't give God just one day a week to honor Him, why do we think we'll see the signs of the anti Christ when he comes into the forefront? Why would we think we'll go to Heaven when we die to spend every day worshiping the Lord? I enjoy sermon series and tend to learn a lot from that format.

These first two series are my favorites, and all of the sermons can be seen on the one page.  ♥

This next series is listed here in its entirety since on the sermons page they are not grouped together.

This is a short 2 sermon series:
